South Market Street

Wilmington, Delaware
Client: Delaware Department of Transportation

Oasis Design Group and RK&K have worked together on this Wilmington, Delaware Gateway Project. US Route 13 Business route that serves as one of Wilmington’s major gateways into the downtown business district. The route splits into a one-way pair, with the northbound direction, following South Walnut Street over the Walnut Street Bridge, into the downtown area and the southbound direction following South Market Street, over the south Market Street Bridge, towards the interchange with I-495. Market Street was experiencing lane closures due to roadway flooding, which reduced capacity and was a significant safety issue for this heavily traveled corridor.

Firm Accomplishments

  • Created 1.3 miles of new urban street grid, reconstructed 3,600 lf of urban arterial above the floodplain and provided multi-modal connections to adjacent neighborhoods.
  • Project design included streetscape, landscape, multimodal components, new sidewalks, bus stops, and new traffic signals.
  • Overcame a major challenge on the project for phasing the construction of Market Street, which needed to balance raising the on-alignment roadway grade up to 4 feet, while maintaining vehicular, pedestrian and delivery access to businesses, pedestrian routes to and through the corridor.
